As well as helping individuals with their particular welfare problems, Stockton & District Advice & Information Service (SDAIS) also carries out Social Policy work at a local, regional and national level. This work involves raising the issues that have been brought to SDAIS with the relevant policy makers to try and address the ‘root cause’ of the problem.
In this way, social policy work plays an important ‘preventative’ role enabling SDAIS to use the experience of some to reduce a potential future impact on many others.
Some of the issues SDAIS has raised include:
- Development of protocol with local bailiffs to try and ensure people with debt problems got assistance from SDAIS
- Impact on lower benefit levels received by young people raised with local M.P.’s (Members of Parliament)
- Problems with people claiming benefits from Jobcentre Plus who claim they have been given incorrect information
